At the corner of Marine Drive and 10th Street in Astoria, Oregon, there is a stairway that leads to the Hidden Underground. In that secret space there is a magical shop called the Weird Sisters Freak Boutique.
Out exploring Astoria for the day, my daughter and I were both drawn in by the decor. Installation artist and owner, Sandra Carr, has created a mystical, inviting environment. Vintage clothing, replica statuary, original jewelry, and knickknacks are displayed amongst sculptured trees and inside a cave!
Regular lighting segues into twinkle lights and unusual paper lanterns. It feels as if you are entering deeper into an enchanted forest as the many playful and unique items call you for a closer look.
Harper Carr, singer, voice actor, and co-owner of the Freak Boutique, let us know about some (no so) secret plans they have for the future. They have put a hole in the side of the shop, which leads next door. This secret entrance will lead to… shhh… a speakeasy. This will be an “experience bar;” serving up experiences rather than alcohol.
When asked what experiences we might expect, Harper described a sock-cratic debate (involving sock puppets and silly voices), fun with taste twister miracle berries, and live music with a local pianist. Beyond the new speakeasy is the “lab” where groups can convene and new projects are underway.
It appears that much fun and hilarity are in store for guests in the near future! If you find yourself in Astoria, I would highly recommend a stop in the Weird Sisters Freak Boutique. It is definately worth a visit!
You can find them on Facebook and Instagram
Update: They have posted on Instagram that the experience bar is now open. So do stop by and check it out!

Oh I love neat little places you have to search out
What a neat little place you found! Love the description of an “enchanted forest”.
This place is truly unique 😀 Has the feel of a hidden wizard’s abode and I dare say, even looks like one.
I think you would love it!
Astoria was the last place I took the family before leaving Washington to our new duty station. We called it our Goonies vacation. The whole town is just amazing.
It is a special place. After one day my daughter and I were about to pack up and move there!
