The great Idaho road trip
As my daughters and I drove across southern Idaho, we were surprised by how dry and barren it looked. Miles and miles of brown hills and scrub. Occasionally we saw green fields being watered, but they were mostly crops of corn or hay. We kept looking for those elusive potatoes but didn’t find them.
Twin Falls, Idaho
Before we left on our road trip, I spent weeks searching for a campsite near Twin Falls. All of them were for RV’s or too far north. I finally found one that was first come first serve and was a little nervous about getting there late and not getting a spot.
There were spots. No one would want to camp there. Dry, smelly, bug infested, no shade… the bees alone had the girls running for the car. I suddenly understood why I couldn’t find a campground.
We ended up having two comfortable nights at the Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott in a town called Burly. Come to think of it, those might have been potato fields behind the hotel…
Pocatello and Lava Hot Springs, Idaho
Our weekend was amazing! Exploring the towns of Pocatello and Lava Hot Springs in eastern Idaho was the highlight of our trip: ziplining, horseback riding, tubing and camping.
We didn’t really do or see as much as I had anticipated for a couple of reasons. The first is that I have a tendency to overestimate our time and energy. The second was a general state of malaise that seemed to grow the longer I was there. The constant eating out, lack of sleep, allergic reactions to everything “desert”, and the poor air quality caused by recent fires had me feeling quite unwell by day number 7.
Boise, Idaho
We took it easy those last three days, driving a few hours a day, looking around Boise, enjoying the hotel pools. Although we had a great time, and learned a lot about southern Idaho, I never did see a potato.

You are spoiled by the beauty of the Oregon landscape. IDAHO is a completly different potato.
Haha good one mom! Now I know where my punniness comes from!
Potaytototo 😀 Honestly, I think there were some crafty aliens hiding said tatoes by clever use of cloaking device lol
I bet that’s it! LOL
No potatoes for you, apparently. 😉
I’ll have to try harder next time! Maybe I can book a night in the giant airbnb potato! Haha
Burley also has a music festival that a lot of people travel in for. Fun fact: Washington grows more potates than Idaho
Washington always has to be extra! LOL Too bad we missed the music festival but Burley was pretty close to Twin Falls and had everything we needed. Plus… every city or town we got to visit just added to the experience!
When we were there we saw lots of potato fields. I guess it really depends on where you are. I forgot which little towns we drove through but it was nothing but cows and potato fields when we were there a few years ago.
Thanks for your comment Boris! It is possible that we saw a potato field and didn’t recognize it! We were looking around as we drove east but did get distracted from time to time. 😀
