Rainey Street is located in the southeast section of downtown Austin, Texas. After a long, hot drive from El Paso, and a short, refreshing nap, the hour was getting late and my brother and I were getting hungry.
About Rainey Street
The former bungalow-style homes on Rainey Street have been added to the National Register of Historic Places. Many have been converted into bars and restaurants, turning this neighborhood into a nightlife hot spot. The vast variety of food and drink options, plentiful patio seating, and live music provide a lively, party atmosphere. I noticed a big group of young women, one of them sporting a bride-to-be sash, as we strolled along. Families, couples, and groups of friends milled around the neighborhood, or relaxed at picnic-style tables. With so many options, the biggest problem becomes which establishment to visit first.
Dinner
After strolling through the area, rife with indecision, we finally decided to forego the strawberry margaritas and buy dinner from one of the plentiful food carts. I chose a grilled cheese sandwich on sourdough, with brisket and spicy pineapple salsa. It was very rich but delicious! After our meal, we headed back to the hotel so we could get up and explore the next morning.
A Little Extra Info
One thing I might mention is that the live music emanating from the bars and restaurants is loud, often outdoors, and competing for your attention as you walk down the street. Imagine living in a neighborhood full of garage bands, all jamming on their front porches with their amps cranked up. If sensory overload is an issue, this street packs a punch.
You will find a lot of construction in this area, and although street parking is allowed, it is limited. So, if you are unable to find a spot, you can use the hourly lot at the end of the street. I zealously chose the three hour option, which cost me $35, so maybe start with one.
